Dr. Unger is a highly trained and experienced cardiothoracic surgeon with clinical interests in heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation,valvular heart disease, coronary artery revascularization and aortic surgery. His research interests focus on preservation techniques in transplantation and he has authored several scientific publications. During his general surgery training, he was presented with the Dmitriy A. Nikitin, M.D., Resident Excellence Award. He later received the Coleman Connolly Award in Thoracic Surgery for mentoring, teaching and fostering a desire to learn. Dr. Unger was born and raised in Norfolk and currently resides there with his wife and son. When he is not caring for patients, he enjoys running, history, art and spending time with his family.
